measuring, pricing, finishing off paintings. How to price. By size? By time? Some large paintings are seemingly effortless, some tiny can take 6 months. Am flabbergasted by my range of sizes. Next show will be 2, perhaps 3 uniform sizes, and I'm thinking...all portraits. Right now fighting back urge to use words...why fighting? have often used phrases in the past, but it's always the sloppiness that is discourgaging. And templates are boring. Perhaps the thing to do is to send paintings out to a master sign painter or something.

Forty two years ago today...

I was in Science class at Emily Carr Elementary School on 25th and Oak, in Vancouver. The principal came in and told us Kennedy had been shot and we could go home. A few moron kids cheered and were quickly silenced by the rest of the class.

Married to Art

A favourite metaphor in Rubens' time was that a painter with considerable artistic gifts 'marries' Pictura, the goddess of painting and creative inspiration. Hence the painter's wife was identified with the goddess of painting and inspiration, and can be viewed as a personification of Pictura in many marriage and family portraits.

The theme became further domesticated and broadened out to include the children resulting from the marriage to Pictura: an artist's works were often spoken of as his 'children', the fruit of his marriage to inspiration, and themselves became a source of new creativity.

Rubens' portraits of Brueghel, and of his own family, are part of this tradition. from A&A Art + Architecture.
