Dec 30 Canal Trees, watercolour on Arches paper, 11"x15"

Today an article in the Gazette about a fellow dog walker who lept into the frigid icy waters to save his dog who fell into the canal...almost exactly the location of this watercolour...right behind the flour mill. Luckily he survived. He was overcome by the cold + hospitalized. Other dog walkers formed a human chain on the ice to rescue him + the dog is fine too...yikes. Angus knows this spot + goes in the water there all the time.

Dec29 Parc Monument, 22x28", oil on canvas

I didn't paint this today, but I'm varnishing it today, so today it's officially finished. It's an oil on canvas of the Mount Royal Monument on Parc Avenue -- the controversial Parc Avenue, officious deaf to democracy municipal government workers want to change to Bourassa Ave...contrary to the wishes of most Montrealers. But I digress. It's a recent painting + according to a friend + well known painter should be priced at $616 as the dimensions are 22x28 + that is a fair + equitable formula for pricing a painter (he then multiplies that figure fifteen fold as he is a well known established painter. However, I will price it at $425 so it will, hopefully, sell quickly so I can buy more supplies, hopefully, quickly. A new year is almost with us, and with it many new ideas and roads to go down...

Finally, things settle down + it's back to painting. Got new brushes + pigments from Santa so here we go, gearing up for a New Year. This study utilizes watercolour pencils, which I'm not yet sure if I like, or whether I'm using them fully. Some colours work better than others...

Happy Hula Days....

I've kept this art+art+life+more art blog since June 2005, starting it just as what was probably my last tv writing gig ended. And to make what was going to be a big long rambling reflection of about memememe+my art making..I'll cut to quick to say, I take my photographing just as serious as my painting. I've been snapping away since my teens with my parents' crappy insto-matic + (co) bought my jeep of a Nikon, in the early 70's, yet my artart blog doesn't reflect this other than the Hula's, the bino series + the dog walk photos. And as a pre-new year resolution, I intend to post more photographs of all sorts here, because this isn't exactly breaking news, but photography is art, too. The end.

back to the grind...

+ all Xmas shopping. With the idea of keeping the "gallery" side of my studio clean + spotless for "by appointment only" (or knocking on the window) visits. In the same vein, I've cleaned up my blog site. Apparently my subject groupings were confusing. So I've grouped all my paintings that are for sale in one clump. All the stuff on paper in another + stuff that's not for sale but gives an indication of what I could do...eg.eg. animal commissions are grouped together.

Thank you all for the incredible turn out to my first annual studio show. The number of people + their generous + kind enthusiasm was overwhelming. So many paintings have gone to so many wonderful homes. I'm so touched. + to the many first time art buyers, I'm so thrilled to start you on what hopefully will become a life time addiction! This painting of the Lachine Canal was one my very latest. The varnish was barely dry...+ now it has settled in a beautiful 1890's home very near the Canal + my Jointe + it all feels terribly right. It's reassuring how certain paintings + the people they end up with are so perfectly matched.

some of my babies, who left home last night...all to wonderful homes. Still quite a few paintings left, for Day 2, Studio Sale. (apologies for huge photos..meant to do small thumbnails but something went wonky...)

The black border isn't a black border, it's my dining room table...the dimensions weren't compatible with my camera lens hence...but actually, it's not bad...gives an indication of what it would like with a big, bold dark frame...

sorry for neglecting...

e-mail, daily painter, etc. + various responsibilities...basically, I've turned off the phone, rejected the computer + am spending time cleaning up my Jointe. Hope to be finished by end of day...+ then concentrate on catching up with stuff.

ok, this is about as minimal as you can get, but it is actually quite accurate, re: Montreal winters. And we had our first dusting this week, altho it's all suddenly melted. Can't still believe Americans picked BUSH over Gore....oh my.

Didn't do this one in a day...it's taken over a year, actually...but I varnished it today...the photo is awful...there's so much detail + glazes+carving...+ it's a big one...48"x60", on wood which was custom made...think my little digital camera can't handle this kind of thing..

'Twas the week before Christmas, wherein, I, Montreal artist, Edith Dora Rey, opens her studio doors for the first Annual Studio Sale in hopes of wresting the forty three dollars the average Canadian HOUSEHOLD hasn't spent on art, vases + carvings this last year. (see Nov 15 rant, I mean post.) It's a wonderful opportunity to buy an original work of art (photograph, watercolour, drawing, or painting, mostly oils...all sizes, mostly especially discounted) for yourself or for those folks that have too much stuff + not enough art.
