a new artist to discover

montreal is falling down...

falling down, falling down + I blame the bicyclists. A battalion of construction workers have been jackhammering de Maisonneuve street to build a bike path thru the heart of the city. Ha. Do we really have to encourage these pedal driving maniacs? I live too near a bike path, the deadly one on Rachel street + it is virtually impossible for me to enter my street, on foot or by car without some hostile incident. They whizz through intersections a million miles an hour, oblivious to everyone except themselves. They are smug, sanctimonious, aggressive fiends. They drive on sidewalks, the wrong side of the streets, through the middle of the forest on the Mountain. They zigzag erratically. They don't follow the most rudimentary traffic rules + the craziest cycle 12 months a year, blinding snow blizzards or not... humbug.

in with the new buddha montreal series. Family members complained about the sorry state of Ms Hula (green palor, almost bald) + bought me this bubbly bouncing fellow from Maine. It will take some taking use to. Ms Hula + I have ridden the mean streets of Montreal for 7 years now, co-inciding with the arrival of our family's first digital camera...

I'm still struggling with the "Banff" series. If I had all the money in the world, I would park myself at the Lake Louise Hotel for a month or 3 + go off with my bear bells + spray + paint, in situ. Alas, I don't. So I took a million research photos-- very specific + precise for future paintings, which of course, got fried in the badlands. Luckily, I have a wonderful husband who is working in Calgary who in his scant spare time is retaking photos of our shared locations...so, this is one of the fruits of those photos. I worked the bulk of the day on these... The goal is to capture just a fragment of the beauty out there. Alas, lately I haven't been painting 24 hours a day + I can feel the rustiness. #6 is getting there...but it still doesn't have the lightness, delicateness, fragility I strive for. I'll just keep at it + when I'm ready, I'll switch to oils....but it has to be said,forget about Tuscany, the south of France...etc. Canada has some of the most incredibly beautiful landscapes on earth... Oh. A friend mentioned the colour of the water in these watercolours. She thought it was cool but kinda fake looking. Well, the water -- I believe due to the minerals + sediment specific to the area -- is actually really, really fake looking. A cheap Calififornia pool colour. Strange + marvelous.

In the not much has changed department. Found this drawing today in a pile of stuff. Underneath the drawing I wrote, many decades ago..."A self-portrait, April 10, 1977, 3:00 AM, Montreal, under the influence of one Noludar sleeping pill, a multitude of du Mauriers, after painting a Stella-Bush-Giotto work which I'm not sure of, after watching Ziegfield Follies, the New Avengers and the 11 o'clock news, after eating an egg and avocado sandwich and after counting 47 Roy Rogers, 12 Pierre Trudeaus and 2 James Deans in the phone book + after doing my nails with Diane Ellen #124 nail polish." I can't remember ever smoking Du Mauriers. Yuck.

so we're driving thru the "cowboy"part of Alberta, about an hour out of Calgary + there are these cows and they all look like Angus. And they're all going to end up on plates, and I'm like, okay, that's it. I cannot eat these beautiful guys, ever again.

Elvis #21, 11x15, arches paper...

one last Elvis + I'll give it a rest. I still love these + plan to do 101 in total. Not like I'm one of those old geezer Elvis fans...it's good practise painting his bust + geez, the guy's an icon an everything. His ol' Blue Moon still gives me goosebumps. Okay, so I am an ol' geezer Elvis fan. I saw everyone of his movies as a kid until the dumb hillbilly one where he played twins + one had blond hair. That was it, I switched to Cliff Richards + Brit music..eg. Beatles.

Wow, amazing...

60 more hits + my blog'll hit 20,000! Gee, I'll have to give the 20,000th a cadeau of some kind.

Went to my "Jointe in the Pointe" + did a flurry of finishing paintings...saw everything with fresh eyes + it seemed very obvious which painting needed what exactly. Nothing like "first impressions" of your own work.

all gone...

my poor hard drive, all my "data" absolutely gone. But I got my computer back...am re-installing all my software, which, luckily, good citizen I am, I bought + didn't pirate. And both my e-mails work again + I can download photographs again. So I'll just have to consider it some kind of artistic rebirth. And anyone who is my friend, or family member, or both, please send me an e-mail to one of my two addresses because my address book is gone, too. Over 1400 e-mail addresses gone! Tomorrow a trip to Club Nice to buy a big fat mother external hard-drive or whatever they're called.

alas...

a team of experts is hard at work, getting my computer back in service + retrieving my data, aka, a big hunk of my life + art.
