My 6 quirky, boring, unspectacular details:

1.  I can't think of one quirky boring unspectacular detail about myself when called upon to think quirky boring unspectacular details about myself. 

2. Well, some people think my constant ranting about urban planning is boring.   It drives me nuts when a new ugly building goes up  somewhere when a beautiful "green" building could have gone there is pretty boring.  I think most architects should be spanked.

3.  Ditto about  my rants about idiots who can barely drool and trip at the same ride bikes without helmets or lights on the wrong side of the street which has a bike path while they are eating, listening to their ipods, talking on their phones, sometimes all at once.  Oh, and in the snow, rain, at night, whatever.

4.  Okay, enough about ranting.  Uh.   Talking to animals.  A lot.   Like they are toddlers because they are + my toddlers are all grown up, so what. 

5. Reading books at any place in the book I feel like reading.  Sometimes the end first so I don't have to worry about how it's going to end. 

6.   I was addicted to Huffington Post but now that the US election is over I've gotten unaddicted, alas.  It was a wonderful addiction. I wish we had interesting politicians on this side of that long border.   Fini.

I haven't read any of the Twilight books, I haven't seen the movie which opened up today  it  but it sounds kind of interesting in so far the writer of the series,Stephenie Meyer, is a Mormon mother of three.  Her strict religious beliefs, eg. pre-marital abstinence, are an integral part of her stories.  So what's really interesting is how kids today, cool, big city kids are responding so passionately to these books and this movie. What does it all mean?

an experiment...not sure how I feel about this as I am definitely old school.  I took a photograph...photoshopped it...added, subtracted, manipulated, all via computer, printed it on watercolour paper, then painted it.  Is that legit?  What is legit?  It's all me but there's software involved...hmm. Will I do more or is this a one off?  It's kind of cool + way more precise than my usual stuff. Warhol vs Durer.

interesting letter from Robert Genn over at The Painter's Keys about Obama's cultural progam + Canada's lack of...

Of interest is Obama's cultural program. He's apparently been working on it for a couple of years, since long before his nomination. For a guy who writes poetry and consults with Bruce Springsteen and Jay-Z, it probably came naturally to form that panel of active professional artists to advise him. 

Obama wants to increase funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and change the Federal Tax Code for artists. He has ideas like sending out "Artists Corps" to underprivileged schools and communities, expansion of public-private partnerships to increase cultural education programs, cultural diplomacy and the inclusion of foreign talent, less inward-looking xenophobia all 'round, as well as health care for artists. 

Obama also backs Senator Patrick Leahy's "Artist-Museum Partnership Act," allowing artists to deduct the fair market value of work given to charitable institutions. We might hope that this enlightenment may shine on fundraisers too. 

Here in Canada, if you want to donate your painting to raise cash for a favorite charity, you can get a "tax receipt" all right, but the government wants you to pretend you sold the work, take the amount into income, and then deduct it. The result is a wash--extra paper-shuffling for accountants, misery and dismay for both artists and charities. We don't get no respect, eh? 

Positive change in this last area would do wonders for charities. Fundraisers would attract better and more valuable art, raise standards, and would give relief to perpetually beleaguered artists. Think of the value to educational institutions alone. 

Canada--that great nation somewhere north of Detroit known for its regular, south-sweeping cold fronts, is watching carefully. So are our American cousins. "It is unprecedented," says Robert L. Lynch, CEO of "Americans for the Arts," a Washington-based arts advocacy group. "No presidential candidate in recent times has addressed cultural issues in such detail."
