I had the feeling Obama was trying to hammer in the health reforms for TK before he died. Alas.

Me too. I read in the paper today that the Dems now lack the number of votes (60) that are needed to pass the Health Care bill. If they can fill his seat soon (his wife could step into the breach and take his seat temporarily, until a vote could be arranged in 5 months), things will be okay.
Ironically, he himself promoted a law, in 2004, (when Bush was running for a second term), that ordained that when a Senate seat was empty, it was to stay empty until an election in five months. This was to ensure that Bush wouldn't push someone into a Senate seat without any election. Now this same law is going to leave his seat open and result in one less Dem in the Senate.
However, a few weeks ago, Kennedy sent letters to urge Congress to annul this law to ensure that someone will hold the seat until the election can be held, thus keeping the 60 Dem votes. Hope that happens, or the Obama Health Care bill will probably die, an awful end to Kennedy's--and Obama's--wonderful work on improving American health care.
