Finally saw it last night, on tv, for pay + well worth it. A huge visual treat, fab director, Baz Luhrmann, who also did the fab Romeo + Juliet + Moulin Rouge, etc.
The reviews so sucked I was a tiny bit worried...shouldn't have been. You laugh, you cry at this African Queen/Gone with the Wind/Lawrence of Abrabia, scope epic, with much humanity + much humour + much warmth. Most critics, if you asked me, should be spanked. They're so into thinking only irony + smart assness is cool, they don't know how to deal with sincerity + passion when they confront it so they just diss it. I wish we, as Canadians could come up with such a big-hearted
ambitious film instead of always just dwelling on how we've screwed up. (Police+ RCMP screwups, injustices, historical tragedies, etc. )
